Protecting Your Security Clearance When Transitioning from the Canadian Armed Forces
For many members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), a security clearance represents years of trust, responsibility, and service. Yet, during the transition to civilian life, one of the most common โ and costly โ misconceptions is that a clearance simply โdisappearsโ upon release. It doesnโt.
At Cyber Catalyst, we work closely with transitioning CAF members, veterans, and employers across Canada. Again and again, we see how a basic understanding of the clearance process can dramatically improve employment outcomes โ particularly in cybersecurity, IT, and defence-adjacent roles.
To help address this gap, weโve created a short, practical guide: โTips on Protecting Your Security Clearance When Transitioning from the Canadian Armed Forces.โ
What Every Transitioning Member Should Know
Here are a few key points drawn from the guide:
Your clearance status matters.
CAF members typically hold Reliability, Secret, or Top Secret clearances, each with defined validity periods. Knowing what you hold and when it expires โ and confirming this with your Unit Security Officer โ is a critical first step.
Documentation is easier to collect before release.
Forms such as the TBS 330-23 (Personnel Screening Consent & Authorization), your CF 54 Release Certificate, and an accurate 10-year address and employment history are far simpler to obtain while still serving.
Clearances donโt โvanishโ โ they become inactive.
Security clearances belong to the Government of Canada. After release, they do not remain active, but they are not erased. With the right employer and timing, they can often be reactivated.
Employers play a key role.
To reactivate an inactive clearance, an employer must be registered with the Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) Contract Security Program. Their Facility Security Officer can then submit a Transfer of Eligibility request.
Timing makes a difference.
Reactivation is typically fastest within the first 12 months after release. In many cases, it remains possible up to 24 months, depending on clearance level and individual circumstances.
Cyber and IT roles often benefit from faster reactivation.
Employers filling cleared cyber, IT, and security roles place real value on candidates whose clearances can be reactivated quickly โ a significant advantage for CAF veterans entering these fields.
Why We Created This Guide
This resource is designed to support informed decision-making โ not to replace official advice. Too many veterans lose momentum in their job search simply because they werenโt aware of how the clearance process works on the civilian side.
A few small, proactive steps can preserve options, shorten hiring timelines, and open doors to meaningful employment.
